Threat Awareness (Instructor-led and Online)
The objective of this 8-hour course is to provide you a process and tool to more systematically observe and assess your environment and identify potential threats.
Our process is designed to increase observer safety and mitigate risk. These observation and assessment techniques are relevant to a wide variety of missions, including controlled narcotics buys, border surveillance, routine law enforcement patrols, providing security at mass gatherings, and safety of employees and property in the workplace. These techniques apply to both personal observation and electronic monitoring/camera surveillance.
Based on social science research, the Second Sight Training Systems (SSTS) baselining process and tool allows the observer to focus their attention from a crowd to an individual or group of individuals displaying behaviors that may be a threat or suspicious. Through early identification, a preemptive action can mitigate a threat to persons or property.
As part of this course, you will learn specific behaviors and combinations which may indicate a person is carrying a weapon, trying to avoid detection, or is a threat. The instructors for the ILT course participated in the social science research from which the course is based. It includes lectures, practical exercises, and group discussions. We conduct a variety of skill-based assessments and provide feedback to ensure that participants are absorbing the material.
Purchase of our online course requires current military or law enforcement affiliation. Affiliation will be verified after purchase and prior to enrollment. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about this process or your eligibility to take this course.
Our instructor-led course is available for private security organizations. Contact us for more information.
Interdiction (Instructor-led & Hybrid)
Law enforcement, military, and security are often tasked to observe and interact with threatening or suspicions people. Behavioral observation and assessment must occur throughout this encounter. At SSTS, we call this an interdiction.
An interdiction between an authority figure and a Person of Interest (POI) may include a verbal conversation between a security guard and a customer at a shopping center. It may also be a proactive stop by a police officer of a person believed to be carrying a weapon. An interdiction is dynamic and requires constant assessment, action, and reaction.
Our Interdiction course builds upon the initial 8-hour threat awareness course. The objective of this 32-hour course is to provide students tools and techniques to conduct a safe and effective interdiction while conducting constant behavioral observation and assessment. This course is relevant to any police, security, or military personnel who has a mission to approach and engage with members of the public.
At SSTS, we believe an interdiction is a standardized sequence of events. To facilitate behavioral observation and the execution of safe and effective interdictions, we developed the Universal Interdiction Framework (UIF) to describe a law enforcement civilian interaction. The UIF captures the dynamic and iterative decision-making process of observations, assessments, predictions, planning, and actions which we found to occur during an interdiction. As a teaching tool, the UIF helps facilitate efficient, legal and safe interdictions.
